national historic site grates cove has been recognized for its unique heritage

The Legend of the Cabot Rock is the belief of the residents of Grates Cove that John Cabot landed here in 1497. This belief was fueled by the presence of a large rock high above the water on a cliff in this area.

This rock has always been known as the cabot rock. Some of those who formerly examined the rock include a Newfoundland Museum curator who professed to be able to read IO CABOTO, SANCUS N SAMALIA, quite plainly.

It is certain that in the mid 1960's two mean from the media removed the face of the rock which contained these inscriptions. Further evidence shows that John Cabot returned to Grates Cove in 1498 and was shipwrecked off what is known as the Grates Point.
