ST. MARY'S BATTERY

Historic Canon Fort Location

It was on this site in 1779 that a battery was erected to provide coastal protection against the raids of American Privateers. Consisting of four nine pounders borrowed from the H.M.S. PROTEUS.

The battery remained in operation throughout the period of the American Revolutionary War, the Napoleonic Wars and the Anglo-American War of 1812-1814. It was finally taken out of service in 1815.
